Bocals
ABL Double Reed English horn bocals are hand-made by Alex Laubin from solid sterling silver using traditional methods. They are normally made with a 22.5 degree (1/16 of a circle) bend, but can be made with more or less bend on request. The socket fitting is made using Valentino synthetic material, but can be made using natural cork according to customer preference.
The standard lengths are #1, #2, and #3, ranging from highest to lowest in pitch. The bore has been refined over several decades to produce even intonation and consistent response throughout the range of the instrument.
Bocal lengths
- #1 — High pitch Designed for use in higher-pitched ensembles, A=442-444. Price: $440
- #2 — Standard pitch Designed to play comfortably at standard concert pitch, A=440–442. Price: $440
- #3 — Low pitch Provides a bit more depth of sound when playing at A=440 with a warmed-up instrument and a suitable reed. Price: $440
